In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs writes about the apes and how one of the great apes named Kerchak is on a massive rampage; he is killing his own apes in the tribe. While he is on this rampage a young female ape named Kala drops accidentally drops her baby from the tops of the trees. Kerchak notices this and jumps to get the baby but Kala is to quick and she takes it from him. Kala climbs up into the tree tops with her dead baby ape and stays there.
After a while Kerchak calms down and orders the tribe to go to the ocean where John Clayton is living with his baby boy. They creep up to the cabin and they stealthily look inside of it because the door is open. John Clayton is asleep while the apes are looking inside his cabin. Kerchak gets close enough to John Clayton but then Clayton wakes up and tries to fight off Kerchak to get to his gun but he is killed easily by Kerchak. They look around the cabin and find Alice's body and also Clayton's baby. Kala snatches up the baby and runs off leaving her own dead baby in the bed.
After Kala leaves Kerchak notices the rifle and tries to gain his courage to touch it. After several attempts he finally grabs it and fires it off. After firing it every ape including him runs away from the rifle.
