Chapter 21 summary of "Tarzan of the Apes"

In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs writes about how Clayton and the sailors that had come before were wandering through the jungle. Clayton became very upset and thought that Jane had been killed and eaten by giant apes. As they were walking through the jungle they encountered the black warriors from Mbonga. The Frenchmen won the battle making the black warriors flee the area back into the Jungle but one of their leaders had been lost with several people wounded. They set up camp for the night trying to heal the wounded. The lieutenant that had been captured was taken back to the village where the people are cannibals. They tortured him by stoning, punching. They had the ceremony being stabbed in the arm blood trickling out of him. He did not scream he took it in as if he was being poked by a dull pencil. Tarzan had gone straight to the village knowing that this battle would be there. Tarzan knew that he only had a small time frame to help the lieutenant. He whipped his whip and scared all of the black warriors to make them run away. Tarzan helped the lieutenant off of the cruel poll that he was hanging from.
