Chapter 26 summary of "Tarzan of the Apes"

In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs continues to write about the journey that Tarzan and D'Arnot were going to the city with boats. They went to eat at a restaurant when a black man with a knife came in and charged Tarzan. Tarzan had broken the black man's arm and made him scream and agony and pain. Also a conversation came at the table that Tarzan and D'Arnot had been sitting at. It was about lions and hunting them. All of the men stated their mind about lions except Tarzan, Tarzan had to keep his past secret so he had to make up a lie to tell the men at his table about his experiences with lions. After he had said this a lion roared out in the jungle and one of the men at the table said there is your chance to show that you only need a knife and a rope to kill a lion. He said he was not going to because he was not hungry but the men at the table thought he was a coward. One of the men bet that Tarzan could not kill the lion for five thousand francs but D'Arnot increased it to ten thousand and it was deal. After a while swinging he caught the scent of Numa and went for the kill. He had killed Numa and started back for the village so he could finally go to find Jane in America. The men back at the village got tired of waiting and started for the jungle to find Tarzan. Right when they came to the edge of the jungle Tarzan came laughing with the carcass of Numa. They pondered of how he killed Numa so easy. They gave him the ten thousand francs and Tarzan wondered of what he could do with it. The next day they were on a boat heading back to get the chest with the treasure. After that they were on several boats and got to Paris. At Paris D'Arnot made Tarzan get his finger prints checked to see if they matched the ones that were in John Clayton's journal. They did not find out that day because the police officer wanted to get the experts position on them.
