Chapter 22 summary of "Tarzan of the Apes"

In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs writes about how the Frenchmen had started their day looking for the  trail to go back to the cabin to get reinforcements. It took them half the day to finally get the wounded back to the cabin. Jane greeted them when they got back to the cabin. Clayton went with the Frenchmen and left Jane and her father back with the cabin. Clayton went back to the cabin to get Jane but when he said his usual greeting she was unusual not hugging him or kissing him. She asked where the man that helped them both was but he did not know. Clayton came to wonder why Jane wanted to know about this. Clayton became jealous and started to make up lies about Tarzan trying to make him sound like he is a bad person, like he is one of the black warriors who attacked them earlier. Jane got upset and did not want to be around Clayton anymore because she believes Tarzan is the greatest of them all and that Clayton is trying to make her think that he is a bad person. The next day Clayton went with the search party to find the lieutenant. The search party went all the way to the village with few black warriors to try to stop them. Night came and they set up camp in the village. They did not find the lieutenant. They receded back to the cabin with the failure. Jane and Clayton got in an argument about Tarzan again and Jane stormed back into the cabin. Clayton wrote a letter to Jane and slides it under the dividing cloth that goes through the middle of the cabin. She eventually read it and she thought that it was not true and she became depressed. They went to bed after he had talked to Esmeralda for a few minutes.
