Chapter 23 summary of "Tarzan of the Apes"

In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs writes about when the lieutenant named D'Arnot woke up from being unconscious when he had been tortured by the warrior in the village. D'Arnot saw Tarzan ad he thought that he was the handsomest man he had ever seen in his life. He tried to talk to Tarzan but Tarzan did not understand. Tarzan got bark and wrote on it. They had a conversation writing their replies. After their conversation D'Arnot went to sleep and became unconscious. When he awoke he was very weak but the illness he had went away. D'Arnot wanted to repay Tarzan and asked him how he could. Tarzan wanted to know how to speak the way of men. D'Arnot agreed to do so. Unknowingly D'Arnot taught Tarzan the way to speak French instead of English. Tarzan asked if D'Arnot was strong enough to go back to the cabin because he missed Jane. When they got back to the cabin they noticed it was deserted. Tarzan fled the cabin and went back to his tribe leaving D'Arnot all by himself. Tarzan stopped and asked himself is he was an ape or man. He said he was a man and went back to the cabin. D'Arnot had locked the door and kept the rifle right beside him. Something had opened the door and D'Arnot had pulled the trigger at whatever was behind the door.
