In this chapter Edgar Rice Burroughs continues to write about after Tarzan 'quits' being the king of the apes. Tarzan had tried to find as much clothing and jewelry he could find to show that he was a man not an ape. As Tarzan was coming back from collecting clothes from the men of Mbonga he heard a gun shot. He started back towards the coast where the gunshot came from. He noticed a ship out in the ocean so he ran into the cabin to see what had happened.
When he went into the cabin he noticed that it had been ransacked but the people did not take the picture that is his prized possession. He heard a sound and found that the people were coming back with their whole army. He quickly wrote a note to the men that were coming and climbed back into a tree. As the people went to the cabin they saw noticed the note and read it. Two of the men got in an argument and one said that the other wouldn't shot him. Tarzan was listening in closely and he threw a spear right at the man with the revolver hitting him in the shoulder making him release the gun. The man that was about to be shot ran off into the jungle and Clayton had to go for him. There was this woman named Miss Porter that Tarzan was deeply attracted to. He decided that he would follow the man to keep him safe.
